Grandpa made this many times for the Bannon kids. The original recipe was given to him by his youngest sister (Aunt Lois). Lois got it from a carnie worker.
In a large heavy pan cook Karo and sugars until it almost smokes.
(This takes a long time! Do not add the butter until this stage is ready!)
Add the butter and stir until melted.
Add the vinegar and soda.
This will immediately cause a chemical reaction!
You'll be surprised!
Put the popped corn into the pan.
Then put the carmel corn onto counter top or table.
Spread out, using a wooden spoon.
Be careful not to get burned. It's very hot.
When cool, store in zip-log bags.
This recipe make a crisp carmel corn! It's delicious!
The secret to carmel corn is cooking the first step long enough...you'll think you're going to burn the syrup. You want to almost burn it! If the end result is sticky carmel corn, you didn't cook it long enough!
