Sour Cream Twists

Aunt Esther (Nig’s sister) used to make these at Christmas and we all loved them so much that my mom started making them at Christmas, too.

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup butter, cold
  • 1 package yeast, dissolved in 1/4 c. water
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 2 egg yolks, well beaten
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Method

Sift the flour and salt together. Cut in the butter leaving pea sized lumps of butter in the mixture.

Add dissolved yeast, sour cream, eggs and vanilla.

MIX BY HAND.

Cover mixture and set in refrigerator for 2 hours.

Take out ½ the dough.

Sprinkle a cutting board with ½ c sugar & roll out oblong to 8" x 16". Fold the 2 ends to center, one end overlapping. Sprinkle with sugar & roll again.

Repeat a 3rd time. Roll out dough a little less than 1/2". Cut into strips 1" x 4". Twist ends of each strip in opposite direction, joining ends.

Bake at 375º for 15 minutes. Check regularly to prevent burning.

Remove from cookie sheet right away or they will stick.
